How to take the reading
- Get a gaugeA screw-on water pressure gauge for a hose thread costs a few dollars at any hardware store.
- Turn everything off insideNo faucets, toilets filling, ice makers, washers or irrigation running.
- Screw it onto an outdoor spigotUse the spigot closest to where the main enters the house if you can.
- Open the spigot fully and readThat number is your static pressure. Check it again in the morning and late evening.
Why it matters
Pressure that is too high quietly shortens the life of toilet fill valves, faucet cartridges, washer hoses and the water heater. Pressure that is too low makes showers weak and points to problems like old galvanized pipe, a failing pressure valve or a leak on the service line.
Pressure questions
Does water pressure change during the day?
